SMBH projects receive Columbus AIA awards

The 2016 AIA Columbus Architecture awards were announced on Nov. 10. Four of our projects were finalists. We are pleased to announce that the Columbus Museum of Art won the Honor Award and Sullivant Hall won a Merit Award. Congratulations to DesignGroup and Acock Associates Architects! Ohio ASLA chapter recognizes SMBH project

The Ohio Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects (OCASLA) recently awarded the West Garden at the Columbus Museum of Art with a Merit award for outstanding landscape architecture site planning and design. SMBH projects earn AIA Awards

The Columbus Jack and Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park Nature Center recently received recognition from AIA Ohio for Newly Completed Buildings, Additions, Remodelings, Renovations and Restorations. The Columbus Jack earned an Honor Award while Battelle Nature Center received a Merit Award. To see all the 2014 award winners, click here.

The AIA Columbus chapter also recently recognized two of SMBH’s projects with a 2014 Architecture award. The Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park Nature Center, a 14,000-square-foot, $5.1 million education center received one of four Merit Awards and the John R. Maloney Family Health and Wellness Center, a 21,500-square-foot, $7.5 million community medical clinic received one of two Honor Awards from among 45 entries submitted. Columbus Jack wins prestigious James B. Recchie Design Award

We are pleased to announce that our project, the Columbus Jack, was recently awarded the Columbus Landmark Foundation’s James B. Recchie Design Award. Founded in 1977, Columbus Landmarks advocates for, promotes and preserves Columbus landmarks and neighborhoods.

The Columbus Jack building was once an abandoned warehouse in Columbus’ Brewery District. In 2011, the building underwent a major transformation to become the new home of WSA Studio, a Columbus-based architecture firm. In November 2013, this project also received an AIA Columbus Design Merit Award from AIA Columbus.

SMBH project receives design award from PCI

For more than 50 years, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Awards program has recognized design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. The program has helped the design and construction community innovate and advance by showcasing ideas that push the envelope, overcome challenges and improve upon existing concepts.

We are pleased to announce that our project, the South Campus Central Chiller Plant, on the campus of The Ohio State University, recently received a 2014 PCI Design Award for Best Custom Solution. Read more about this innovative project here.

SMBH projects among finalists for James B. Recchie Design Award

We are pleased to announce that two of our projects, The Columbus Jack and Linden-McKinley STEM Academy were among five finalists for the 25th annual James B. Recchie Design Awards. The award is given in honor of the late James B. Recchie, a founding trustee of Columbus Landmarks Foundation. It honors excellence in urban design in historic or new buildings and places, additions to existing buildings, parks, public spaces and public art. The winner will be announced at the Annual James B. Recchie Design Award Reception & Program on Thursday, October 9 at 5:30 p.m.

SMBH Projects Receive AIA Columbus Design Awards

The AIA Columbus Chapter is one of the largest urban components of the American Institute of Architects in the Midwest with members from throughout the Central Ohio area - serving a 32-county area. On November 13, AIA Columbus held their annual design awards program. Of the 5 projects that were given awards, SMBH, Inc. is proud to have worked on 2 of them – The Ohio State University South High Rise Residence Halls and the Columbus Jack building. The South High Rise project was a $120 million renovation of 5 existing residence halls which included 2 eleven story additions. Ken Siegfried, Senior Project Engineer and BIM Specialist Dave Hawkins headed up the project for SMBH. Click here to view more photos of these new residence halls.

The Columbus Jack building was once an abandoned warehouse in Columbus’s Brewery District. In 2011, the building underwent a major transformation to become the new home of WSA Studio. The unique 13,000-square-foot structure is filled with heavy timber ceilings, aged and distressed brick walls, industrial windows, raw concrete floors, a dramatic vestigial elevator and a roof terrace. The SMBH team on this award-winning project was Principal/Vice President Bob Baumann, Senior Project Engineer Bill Lantz, and BIM Specialist Carrie Messerly.

Two Projects Receive Outstanding Design Honors

We are pleased to announce that two of our projects, Nelson Commons Dining Hall Renovations on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and Battelle Hall Science Center at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio have recently been selected to appear as an Outstanding Design in the August 2013 American School & University Educational Interiors Showcase - the premier competition honoring education interiors excellence. This year, the panel of Educational Interiors Showcase judges selected 80 projects which are featured in the August issue of American School & University.
