SMBH Project Celebrated with Unveiling Ceremony

National Blue and Green Day, celebrated on April 21, is a day set aside to share the excitement and power of organ donation. On the evening of April 21, the new Lifeline of Ohio Donor Memorial was unveiled.

SMBH is proud to have participated in this important and inspirational project. The Donor Memorial is part of a project that included renovations to Lifeline of Ohio's 20,000 sq. ft. building, a new conference center addition, new parking, landscaping, and site work.

Sign Up Now For SMBH's Summer Volleyball League

It is time to start rallying your volleyball teams for this year's AIA Architectural and Engineering Volleyball League organized by SMBH! This coed grass league will begin matches in June and continue through the summer. The games are all on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. at the field in front of the SMBH offices. The league is open to architecture firms, engineering firms and building trades/construction companies. Send an email to amilligan@smbhinc.com for more information or to register your team. Team entries are due by May 31.

Noser Presents to ACI student chapter at OSU

“The Structural Perspective of The Ohio State University North Residential District Transformation” was the topic of Joe Noser’s presentation to the American Concrete Institute's (ACI) student chapter at The Ohio State University on April 13.

The North Residential District Transformation (NRDT) at OSU added a total of 3,200 new beds (eight new residential buildings), a dining and event building, an athletic building and low rise additions to three existing towers in the district for a total of 1.1 million square feet of space.

The presentation discussed the various aspects of the project from a structural perspective. Topics included: working in a studio environment, collaboration with numerous consultants, development of structural systems, the delivery system (Design/Build) and BIM.

Hooper to present at SEAoO's Mentoring Night

On March 23, SMBH's Rob Hooper, PE will take part in the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio (SEAoO) mentoring night in Columbus. "A Structural Engineer's Prospective: Lessons learned from the design of a seven story, mile-long industrial plant for a Japanese client," is the title of the presentation and based on the opportunity Rob had to work on a multinational project in South Carolina.

Rob will be recounting multiple trips to Otsu, Japan, working with many different process engineers and architects, to design an integrated and complex seven-story facility. He will also be discussing the design challenges, coordination issues and communication challenges with Chinese and Korean equipment suppliers and British steel detailers.

Metz presents at BX event

On March 2, SMBH President Stephen Metz was one of the presenters for a Builders Exchange (BX) instructional event. This class, "Advanced Construction Drawings," provided attendees instruction from local industry experts in site work, structural, HVAC/plumbing and electrical drawings. Other presenters included John Igel (George J. Igel & Co., Inc.), Mark Massman (West-Ward Pharmaceuticals), Garry Montgomery (Dynamix Engineering, Ltd.) and Ryan Brickner (Speer Mechanical).

SMBH completes 8th annual KL/r challenge

On November 21, the SMBHealth and Wellness team kicked off the 8th annual KL/r campaign with the initial weigh in. What is the KL/r? It is known as the "slenderness ratio" in structural engineering. The challenge is designed to keep our team motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the holiday season. The program ran through the end of the year with the final weigh-in taking place on January 3. Check out our Facebook page to see this year's winners! Jerry Marselle provides presentation at January BX LEED breakfast meeting

On January 13, the BX LEED breakfast meeting featured a presentation by SMBH's Jerry Marselle on "Bringing Revit Into Your Life." Attendees learned how creating Revit standards and communicating them successfully to the project team can improve the success of a project. The program emphasized the importance of strong communication skills and good practices that will ease the transition from 2D Drafting into Revit. The course is approved for 1 LU credit from AIA and is also approved for 1 CE hour from GBCI.

Noser and Hendren present to construction class at The Ohio State University

Joe Noser and Kara Hendren are presenting on January 31 to The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture’s spring semester construction class. The presentation will focus on concrete construction with an emphasis on post-tensioned concrete. Practical lessons will be discussed and construction photos from several well-known projects, including the Knowlton School of Architecture building, the Scioto Mile building and the OSU North Residential District Transformation residential buildings, will be included.

Lewis Completes PE Exam

We are pleased to announce that design engineer Jeremy Lewis has successfully passed the Ohio professional engineer (PE) exam. The PE license is the engineering profession's highest standard of competence, a symbol of achievement and an assurance of quality. To become licensed, engineers must complete a four-year college degree, work under a professional engineer for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams and earn a license from their state's licensure board.

SMBH Participates in CAD Display

Once again this year, SMBH is participating in The Center for Architecture and Design’s (CAD) Orange Line holiday train exhibit. The display carries forth a holiday tradition of the old Lazarus department store with a cityscape-inspired holiday train window display.

This year's theme is "Hip Hop Holiday High-Rise" in which we were challenged to develop a 12" x 18" display of our vision for high-rise living/working/playing inspired by the hip hop music genre. Our building materials are white Legos!

This design team from SMBH included Scott Degan, Nathan Miller, Steven Armstrong, Jeremy Lewis and Jeff Collins.

The exhibit will be on display at CAD beginning December 2. See pictures of our entry on our Facebook page.

Metz and Ohio CTC publish design-assist article

SMBH President Stephen Metz is a member of the Ohio Construction Transformation Consortium (OCTC) which represents a cross-section of construction industry disciplines—architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and planners. Their goal is to help the construction industry achieve greater efficiency, productivity, and success by examining how projects are performed and developing strategies and guidelines for doing them better. The group provides white paper development, speakers for conferences and client information sessions.

Recently, their article "Design-assist: The way to really fly" was published in the June issue of BD+C magazine. In this article, experts explain the benefits of design-assist and the process of retaining subcontractors to assist other building team members in the development of a design. Miller and Fling pass Ohio PE exams

We are pleased to announce that project engineers Nathan Miller and Lara Fling, CDT have successfully passed their Ohio professional engineer (PE) exam. The PE license is the engineering profession's highest standard of competence, a symbol of achievement and an assurance of quality. To become licensed, engineers must complete a four-year college degree, work under a professional engineer for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams and earn a license from their state's licensure board. To retain their licenses, PEs must continually maintain and improve their skills throughout their careers. With Nathan and Lara's designations, SMBH, Inc. now has 14 PEs on staff.

Africentric Athletics complex completed

A project that SMBH designed, Columbus City Schools’ Africentric Athletics complex, was recently completed. This project, designed by SMBH’s Jeremy Lewis, included a customized pre-engineered metal building to house a basketball court, locker rooms and training facilities. The seven-acre site was also developed to create a football field with asphalt track and stadium seating. See completed project photos on Facebook.

SMBH, Inc. Supports P.L.A.Y. Fundraiser

SMBH is pleased to support Champions For P.L.A.Y. (Private Leisure Assistance for Youth) — a grant program offered through the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department that provides children of financially-challenged families the opportunity to participate in leisure and recreation activities. One of the largest fundraisers for the organization is a golf event held each May and this year’s event was held on May 16. In addition to monetary support to this worthy organization, members of our team serve on the steering committee as well as participate on the day of the event.

Unique project at Kenyon College

Glenwood Community Center celebrates grand opening

Marselle begins Rising Leaders program

Jerry Marselle has just begun the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio Rising Leaders Institute program. The Rising Leaders Institute provides intensive, high level business education and leadership training to the construction industry’s future top managers. The program features a curriculum developed for the Builders Exchange by The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. Sessions are instructed by OSU faculty members along with industry leaders. Last year, SMBH’s Joe Noser completed this program as well.

The Rising Leaders Institute, supported by a grant from the Builders Exchange Foundation, is an intensive program focused on building management skills and business knowledge of high potential individuals, and preparing them to serve as the future leaders in the construction industry. Participants are required to have a champion from their company, a manager who will act as a mentor to the student throughout the program.

AIA Columbus Announces Architecture Awards

On November 12, the Columbus Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Columbus) announced the seven winners of their annual architecture awards competition. We are pleased to announce that two of our projects, Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) Whitehall Branch and Battery B Apartments, were among the winners. The judges selected the winners from approximately 50 entries. The Battery B project won an Honor Award and the CML Whitehall project won a Merit Award. Read more about all the projects here.

Robey Hosts International Exchange Students

Carlisle Building Re-Opening Special Event

Last year, SMBH was part of the renovation of the Carlisle building in Chillicothe. This project has special meaning for one of our BIM Specialists, Ryan Harmon. Not only was Ryan a part of the SMBH design team, in April 2003 when a fire broke out and gutted the four-story building, Ryan’s father, Bob, was the fire captain in charge of fighting the fire.

Now, after a three-year, $10 million renovation, the Carlisle will reopen with office space on the first floor and 32 urban-loft apartments on the other three. In this article, Bob Harmon talks about his memories of the fire and how his crews fought to save the building.

SMBH’s Bill Shelley was also in attendance at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the building on October 19.

Marselle to Present “Introduction to BIM”

CSCC often invites guest lecturers to their classrooms to provide real world perspective to the concepts they teach in class. Jerry will be discussing “Bringing Revit Into Your Life” which is one of SMBH’s AIA-approved presentations.

SMBH’s media center project at Capital University is under construction

SMBH's project, the Convergent Media Center at Capital University, is the epitome of creativity and collaboration. Loy Hall was demolished in June (see video here) so construction could begin on the 34,430-square-foot facility that will combine technology and media-related degree programs and disciplines. The center, estimated to cost $16 million, will include classrooms and performance spaces, digital-design laboratories, new faculty workspaces and conference rooms, and television, radio, digital-art and recording studios. Restoration complete on the Granville Inn

SMBH’s project, The Granville Inn, reopened their doors in May after an eight-month renovation of the 91-year-old inn. The construction plan included restoring historic character while adding modern equipment such as a new elevator, new heating and cooling systems, and fire alarms and sprinklers. The restoration team also added nine guest rooms by raising the roof on the back side of the building, where the change is invisible to the public. SMBH Project Has Grand Opening

Our project, the Whitehall branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library - a new 20,000-square-foot facility located at 4445 E. Broad Street - held its grand opening on April 11. SMBH’s Bob Baumann (project manager on the project), Lara Fling (project engineer on the project) and Jeff Collins (BIM Specialist on the project) attended the grand opening ceremony.

SMBH Project Reaches LEED Milestone

We are pleased to announce that our project, Violet Elementary school in Pickerington, Ohio, has become the 200th education facility in the state to achieve certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its use of environmentally friendly design. The building achieved the rating under the USGBC’s LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) for Schools® certification system. For more information on this project, click here.

This coed grass league will begin matches in June and continue through the summer. The games are on Thursday nights at 7 p.m. at the field in front of the SMBH offices. Last year, SMBH was ranked 25 out of 25 firms on the list. Metz Article Featured in The Construction Specifier

Stephen Metz’s article, “Specifying Structural Framing Systems” was recently featured in the March issue of The Construction Specifier. This article examines various material options (steel, concrete, masonry, and fire-retardant-treated wood) and highlights a retrofit project for The Ohio State University’s South Residential District where four towers were combined into two buildings through the construction of 11-story connectors. Zane State Project Achieves LEED Gold

We are pleased to announce that our project, the EPIC Center at Zane State College has achieved LEED Gold. The one-story facility – which recently had its ribbon cutting ceremony on Jan. 9 - houses state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories as well as student amenities, including a student services department, a bookstore, and courtyard that is ideal for quiet study. Other unique features include a wind turbine court and pedestrian bridge that connects the EPIC Center to the College’s Willett-Pratt Training Center classrooms and laboratories.

Beier Presents at Ohio Concrete’s Winter Meeting

Beier’s presentation “Intro to Structural Concrete Design” featured a case study on the north dormitory additions on the campus of The Ohio State University.

SMBH’s annual chili cook-off results are in! Congrats to this year's three big winners. Tom Callahan was crowned the Grand Chili Champion for his "Ski Weekend Chili" and was presented with the golden trophy. Jeff Collins beefed it up with his "Open Range Chili" which earned him first place in the Meatiest Chili category. Best Alternative Recipe went to Lisa Connelly with her dynamic "Crazy Mixed-Up Peanut Butter, Pumpkin & Hominy Chili". Competition was tough this year and a great time was had by all! SMBH Announces Promotions of Joe Noser and Kara Hendren

We are pleased to announce that Joe Noser, PE has recently been named Director of Structural Engineering and Kara Hendren, PE has recently been named Director of Structural Engineering, Design/Build.

Noser is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and has worked at SMBH, Inc. as a project manager and project engineer for more than seven years. He is active in the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio (SEAoO), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and has recently started the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio Rising Leaders Institute program which provides intensive, high level business education and leadership training to the construction industry’s future top managers.

Hendren is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in civil engineering and has worked as a project manager and project engineer with SMBH, Inc. for more than six years. She is also active in SEAoO, ASCE, and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

In their new positions, Noser and Hendren will be responsible for the management of projects and personnel, including supervision of project managers, budget and allocation of resources between projects. They will also be responsible for business development and contributing to the strategic vision of the company.

“We are excited that Joe and Kara are becoming leaders in our growing firm,” said SMBH, Inc. President Stephen Metz. “Their new positions will allow us to maintain our level of service and responsiveness that we are known for while growing to better serve our clients. Both Joe and Kara have proven themselves as capable leaders, both inside and outside of the firm, and are strong client advocates.”

Noser begins Rising Leaders program

Joe Noser has just begun the Builders Exchange of Central Ohio Rising Leaders Institute program. The Rising Leaders Institute provides intensive, high level business education and leadership training to the construction industry’s future top managers. The program features a curriculum developed for the Builders Exchange by The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. Sessions are instructed by OSU faculty members along with industry leaders.

The Rising Leaders Institute, supported by a grant from the Builders Exchange Foundation, is an intensive program focused on building management skills and business knowledge of high potential individuals, and preparing them to serve as the future leaders in the construction industry. Participants are required to have a champion from their company, a manager who will act as a mentor to the student throughout the program.

Lewis and Guter Complete FE Exam

Jeremy Lewis and Austin Guter have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The exam is typically the first step in the process leading to a PE license. The NCEES is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing professional licensure for engineers and surveyors. Way to go Jeremy and Austin!

Metz Presents to OSU Students

The SMBHealth and Wellness team will kick off our 6th annual KL/r Campaign on November 24 with the initial weigh-in. Not familiar with KL/r ? It is known as the “slenderness ratio” in structural engineering. The challenge is designed to keep our team motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the holiday season. Westgate Community Center re-opens

The City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Dept. re-dedicated the Westgate Community Center on Thursday, Oct. 16 after being closed for more than a year for renovations. Originally built in 1963 as a 31,300-square-foot facility, the kitchen, gymnasium, auditorium, game room, restrooms on the first floor, classrooms, dance studio, the staff office, and the lobby have all received updates. SMBH is proud to have been part of this $5.5 million transformation project. View photos of the renovated center here.

SMBH projects earn AIA Awards

The Columbus Jack and Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park Nature Center recently received recognition from AIA Ohio for Newly Completed Buildings, Additions, Remodelings, Renovations and Restorations. The Columbus Jack earned an Honor Award while Battelle Nature Center received a Merit Award. To see all the 2014 award winners, click here.

The AIA Columbus chapter also recently recognized two of SMBH’s projects with a 2014 Architecture award. The Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park Nature Center, a 14,000-square-foot, $5.1 million education center received one of four Merit Awards and the John R. Maloney Family Health and Wellness Center, a 21,500-square-foot, $7.5 million community medical clinic received one of two Honor Awards from among 45 entries submitted. Concrete slabs are focus at November ACI-Central Ohio meeting

Concrete Slabs, Moisture and Flooring will be the topic of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Central Ohio chapter’s monthly meeting on Nov. 20. Elizabeth Rodenkirch at CTLGroup will discuss moisture in slabs and the issues it presents in the building industry today. The discussion will include preconstruction issues to consider for mitigating moisture along with moisture remediation options, including procedures for slab preparation and quality control during application of a moisture suppression system should one be needed.

Columbus Jack wins prestigious James B. Recchie Design Award

We are pleased to announce that our project, the Columbus Jack, was recently awarded the Columbus Landmark Foundation’s James B. Recchie Design Award. Founded in 1977, Columbus Landmarks advocates for, promotes and preserves Columbus landmarks and neighborhoods.

The Columbus Jack building was once an abandoned warehouse in Columbus’ Brewery District. In 2011, the building underwent a major transformation to become the new home of WSA Studio, a Columbus-based architecture firm. In November 2013, this project also received an AIA Columbus Design Merit Award from AIA Columbus.

Noser presents to OSU CE students

On Oct. 21, SMBH’s Joe Noser joined  Messer Construction on a combination presentation and subsequent tour of the North Residential District Transformation (NRDT) project on the campus of The Ohio State University. Noser spoke to students from a concrete design class and members of the student chapter of the Structural Engineer’s Association of Ohio (SEAoO). The presentation included a project and structural systems overview as well as a discussion about the structural designs of the buildings and was followed by a tour of the project site. The NRDT is a $370 million renovation that aims to enhance OSU’s Second-year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) by adding 3,200 additional beds through the construction of 11 new buildings.

For more than 50 years, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Awards program has recognized design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. The program has helped the design and construction community innovate and advance by showcasing ideas that push the envelope, overcome challenges and improve upon existing concepts.

Sullivant Hall celebrates grand re-opening

The celebration honored the transformation and renovation of the historic building which is situated on the corner of High Street and 15th Avenue. The public was invited to an afternoon of festivities to honor the building and the university’s arts department and centers that are housed there.

We are pleased to announce that two of our projects, The Columbus Jack and Linden-McKinley STEM Academy were among five finalists for the 25th annual James B. Recchie Design Awards. The award is given in honor of the late James B. Recchie, a founding trustee of Columbus Landmarks Foundation. It honors excellence in urban design in historic or new buildings and places, additions to existing buildings, parks, public spaces and public art. The winner will be announced at the Annual James B. Recchie Design Award Reception & Program on Thursday, October 9 at 5:30 p.m.
