With the mission to provide youth with developmental activities, guidance and support as an alternative to destructive behavior and to assist them in becoming responsible and productive citizens, the J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center is an important fixture for the community. The Center provides a year-round program of recreation and related social services. For their new facility, the Center needed to combine athletic, educational and child care space under one roof. In many places, the structure was exposed, including the tube steel trusses in the “Main Street” area that is supported by concrete columns. The facility has many different roof levels and types and the connections from the different steel roof levels to the concrete columns were quite challenging. The structure needed to be designed to allow the ductwork to pass through the “Main Street” area. The classrooms have 12/12 slope pitched ceilings.
