The Ohio State University embarked upon a new facility to house its office spaces for Student Academic Services. Located in Columbus on Lane Avenue, the 125,000 SF, six-story building is a steel structure with a brick façade.
Several challenges had to be met by the project team to complete the structure. The foundation of the building had to be customized to meet the varying depths of shale on the site. Additionally, the foundation had to be designed in coordination with the wall of a parking structure.
Designed as an inverted “V,” the west end of the 330-foot-long building cantilevers 42 feet. As a solution, the project team used four pieces of 2-inch, 10-inch deep steel bars to support the cantilevers, achieving the design goal of having very little visible structure supporting the cantilever.
