We're excited to announce our upcoming Open House on Nov 3! Come on over to our office between 4 - 7 to enjoy some food and fun in celebration of our 50th Anniversary!

A creative culture of passionate people engaged in innovative structural design.
We do structural engineering for so many building types that, basically, if it's a building, we'll structurally engineer it!
We love the range of our work. The only downside of having such a diverse portfolio is that sometimes we're not well-known for designing the full range of buildings we work on. We try to share as many of our projects as we can on social media, but there are many that haven't been showcased. So, we went back through our archives to show you projects you may not have known are ours.
Pre K - 12 Education? Yeah, SMBH Does That!
We have been involved in literally hundreds of Pre K - 12 school projects. We have extensive experience working on specialized projects including early colleges, STEM, vocational and training programs, amphitheaters, and athletic facilities that run the gamut between stadiums, fieldhouses, and gymnasiums to all their necessary supporting spaces like locker rooms, concession stands, and press boxes. We have worked on over $1 billion worth of OFCC projects in the last 10 years.
The new Dover High School project pictured here built a 137,854 SF high school to house grades 9-12 with a 16,532 SF Career Tech Space, a 1,200-seat auditorium, and a state-of-the-art gymnasium. It features a three-story academic wing, indoor/outdoor learning stairs, and a shared sunken courtyard and inner dining commons.
But we don't just do big educational projects! We also take care of smaller projects that pop up, like a duct chase infill we did recently at the same school. We looked at an existing CMU wall after a void was filled, providing analysis and necessary bracing and reinforcement details.
Big or small, when it comes to buildings we do it all. Contact us to talk about your next project today!
We've had lots of changes recently, including new hires and promotions that we're excited to announce! Help us congratulate our team members on their many achievements!
Help us give a welcome to Project Engineer Steven Morra, who recently started at SMBH.
Welcome back to Kami Wiesner, our former intern who recently graduated from The Ohio State University and has returned to join us full time!
And welcome and best wishes to Caitlyn Olson, who just finished her summer internship with us.
Project Engineer
Steven joined SMBH in 2022 with four years of experience in field engineering and designing with steel, foundation systems, masonry, cold-formed metal framing, wood, and excavation support and demolition plans. Since then, he has used his expertise on projects in the retail and manufacturing and industrial sectors. Steven’s eagerness to learn and ability to jump into a project head-first have quickly proven him an asset on our structural team.
Design Engineer
Kami started as an intern at SMBH in 2020 while attending The Ohio State University. After graduating with her bachelor's degree in civil engineering, she decided to come back and join us full-time. Kami has experience designing with cast-in-place concrete, steel, cold-formed metal framing, and dimensional lumber. With her passion for historic buildings and restorations, she has quickly become one of our go-to team members for these projects. Kami has a talent for asking good questions and is eager to learn, making her a great member of the structural team.
Summer Intern
Caitlyn is an undergraduate student at the University of Dayton who is interning this summer at SMBH. She has prior experience as an estimator with a local contractor, which contributes to her understanding of the design and construction phases of a project. Paired with her ability to learn things quickly, Caitlyn’s enthusiasm for taking on challenges has made her an excellent team member and indicates an auspicious future. Caitlyn's last day with us is August 10th, but we've loved having her on board!
Chief Financial Officer
Dawn joined SMBH in 2016 as an accomplished accounting professional with over 20 years of experience in the corporate and non-profit industries. After six years as Controller, she became SMBH’s first full-time, in-house Chief Financial Officer. Dawn oversees SMBH’s financial activities and strategic financial planning. Her success in her role of taking complex data – current, past, and predicted financial results – into perspective to help make financial decisions has proven her to be a key member of the team.
Project Engineer 2
Eric became a Certified Professional Engineer in May 2022.
Eric began working at SMBH in 2017 as a Design Engineer with experience in hospital design. He quickly earned the title of Project Engineer in 2020 and became a certified Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio in 2022. He has worked on a wide range of building types and industries, including a few of his favorite projects; the Westerville Community Center, the Good Haus, and the Delaware County Library. His work in foundation systems, masonry, steel, cold-formed metal framing, and dimensional lumber has made him a highly flexible and valuable member of the structural team.
Project Engineer 2
Nathan became a Certified Professional Engineer in December 2021.
Nathan started at SMBH as a Project Engineer in 2020 with three years of prior experience designing wood mid-rise structures and steel-framed industrial projects. Since joining us, Nathan has worked on a wide range of additional project and building types and is fluent in designing with cast-in-place concrete, foundation systems, steel, cold-form metal framing, heavy timber, and dimensional lumber. He has also become much more experienced with retail, becoming a co-manager of two of our biggest retail brands.
Project Engineer 1
Alex comes from a family of masons and received his engineering calling early while spending time on construction sites during the summer. After graduating with his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering, Alex joined SMBH in 2020. Since then, he has progressed in many ways at a tremendous rate while handling multiple industrial projects at a high level. He now has direct experience with cast-in-place concrete, steel, and dimensional lumber for new builds, renovations, and investigations in the commercial, manufacturing and industrial, public, and recreational sectors. Alex’s enthusiasm and ability to learn things quickly have made him a valuable asset to our structural team.
Project Engineer 1
Matt joined SMBH after graduating from The Ohio State University in 2020. Since then, he’s gained experience in designing new builds and renovation projects using cast-in-place concrete, foundation systems, and steel for educational, and manufacturing and industrial, and retail sectors. He has taken on many retail projects and brand management responsibilities. Matt’s ability to pick things up quickly and his attention to detail have made him a proven asset to our structural team.
We do structural engineering for various building types; civic, commercial, higher education, pre- K-12 education, healthcare, hospitality, residential, manufacturing, industrial, mixed-use, recreational, religious, retail, and more. Basically, if it's a building, we'll structurally engineer it!
We love the range of building types we work on because it lets us explore many different kinds of structural engineering, not to mention making every day a little different from the last. The only downside of having such a diverse project base is that sometimes we're not known for designing all the types of buildings we do. We try to share as many of our projects as we can on social media, but there are many that haven't been showcased. So, we went back through our archives to show you projects you may not have known are ours.
Higher Education? Heck yeah, SMBH Does That.
We've worked on well over 100 projects on The Ohio State University's main campus alone. Pictured here are the newly renovated Pomerene + Oxley Halls. This was a 122,265 SF historical renovation of two buildings from the early 1900s. The dramatic interior and exterior renovations provided space for faculty and staff offices, conference and meeting rooms, classrooms, computer labs, data storage, and support areas.
We also do small projects, even for a client as big as The Ohio State University. The Caldwell Lab HVAC Renovation is a great example. We designed new duct openings in the floors, support for the new HVAC units, piping penetrations, and support for the new rated corridor ceilings - all critical measures, but much less flashy than the picture of Pomerene + Oxley Halls.
Big or small, when it comes to buildings we do it all. Let's start strategizing your next project today!
