SMBH’s First Television Commercial, Courtesy of Spark Fit Columbus

In case you missed our announcement in June, we won the Spark Fit Columbus Spring Challenge! The prize was a commercial courtesy of Spark Fit and Sinclair Broadcasting. The ad aired in the greater Columbus area in August, but it's also available on YouTube!

We're also proud to announce that we're participating in the Spark Fit Columbus Fall challenge as well, which is already underway! This time we have 11 more team members counting their minutes with a total of 23 participants! As of September 15th, we're already in the #1 spot in the Small Company category.

Here's to hoping we can keep pace with our record for the Spring challenge!

SMBH Presents at “Building the Future” on OSU’s Interdisciplinary Research Facility

The Central Ohio Chapter of the American Concrete Institute's next monthly meeting features our very own Partner + Director, Joe Noser, and Project Engineer, Jeremy Lewis!

Jeremy Lewis will be moderating the presentations given by Joe Noser and Lithko's Alex Wall. They'll be discussing the uniqueness of this 6-story, 305,000-square foot, $220,000,000 laboratory that will serve biomedical, life sciences, engineering, environmental sciences, and other disciplines at The Ohio State University. Additionally, two floors of the facility will be dedicated to the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center including its new Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology.

Joe Noser will be showcasing the unique structural technology used, called voided slabs - consisting of oval spheres in the slab to reduce the amount of concrete, resulting in a thicker slab that weighs less. This is the first building to use voided slabs in Ohio and the tenth in the United States. Alex Wall will share information on the IRF's mega-pour foundation that used 550 tons of rebar and 6,700 cubic yards of concrete, poured at 400 cubic yards per hour.

Come enjoy dinner and learn about this fantastic project on Thursday, September 2nd at The Boat House at Confluence Park! You can find additional information, including ticket prices, here.

The Joseph Nashville Boutique Hotel Update!

Our Partner + Director, Joe Noser, was recently in Nashville, Tennessee for vacation and couldn't help stopping by The Joseph Nashville Boutique Hotel to see the finished results of our work in person.

The new 21-story, 300-room boutique hotel is located in the heart of the Nashville music district on the corner of Korean Veteran's Boulevard and 4th Avenue South. The hotel services Music City Center guests and other enthusiasts of the local arts scene as well as provides parking space for the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. The many amenities it features include a restaurant and bar, conference and meeting spaces, and a roof-top pool.

The hotel and parking are post-tensioned concrete structures supported on rock-bearing drilled piers. Lateral loads were resisted by a concrete shearwall-frame interaction system using concrete strengths as high as 11,000 psi. There was an existing stormwater drainage tunnel that extends diagonally across the site. To protect the tunnel, several significant foundation transfer elements were required for columns and shearwalls that were located over the tunnel. The transfers included the main shearwall around the elevator core. The building completely fills the site, with property line conditions against the building on the west, an alley on the north side, and public property on the other sides.

Take a look the next time you're in Nashville - or better yet, stay there!

SMBH Wins Spark Fit Columbus Spring Fit City Challenge!

We are the proud winners of the Spark Columbus 2021 Spring Fit City Challenge! We won the Small Company Category with 26,647 active minutes.

The challenge tracked fitness minutes of all types - "walks with the dog, family bike rides, a yoga session, roller skating, gardening - if you're active, you're in."

Because wellness is a priority for SMBH, and many of our team members are already very active, this was a perfect fit for us. We started keeping track of all our minutes and managed to clock 18.5 days by the end of the competition!

This has been such a fun challenge for us as individuals and as a team, and we can't wait to participate in the next one. In the meantime, a big thank you goes to our team members who really made their minutes count. We're always better together!

SparkColumbus Winner
