This project was initiated by the Delaware County Master Plan, which recommended a 63,000-square-foot Sandusky Street courthouse. The courthouse is on a two-story, 200-car parking garage cut into the hill east of Sandusky Street. The initial vision was for the new design to complement the existing Hayes Building to the north. The schematic design led to a two-story, post-tension concrete frame parking garage below the courthouse. The garage was founded on deep foundations or a mat foundation. The third floor is positioned as the entrance from Sandusky Street. The third floor is a post-tension concrete frame with transfer girders supporting the steel-framed courthouse above. The courthouse is three stories of composite steel framing of concrete slabs-on-steel deck. The roof supports rooftop mechanical equipment that is screened from views from the street.
The new building features a secure garage entrance for police vehicles, a prisoner-only elevator, and 160 cameras inside and out, ten times more than the original.
