The Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center opened on November 6, 1993. The $15.2 million state-of-the-art performing arts complex serves as a performance home for Clark State’s own season of events, as well as six area resident art groups in Springfield and Wittenberg University. The award-winning, 86,000 square-foot Clark State Performing Arts Center is situated on 5.5 acres in downtown Springfield and houses rental space that is designed and equipped to accommodate musical performances, theater presentations, conferences, business meetings and other activities.

With its 1,500-seat Kuss Auditorium, 200-seat Turner Studio Theatre, and the Salerno Educational Center, the Center can accommodate a wide-range of events and educational activities. For small parties, art shows and small receptions, you may reserve the elegantly furnished Hall of Honor or the Davidson Grand Lobby. The Community Rooms are equipped with operable walls that can enlarge or decrease the size of the area, and a kitchenette is adjacent. Four classrooms are also available.

In addition, the Center provides space for numerous other art and community organizations for a wide variety of events from Broadway shows and top name entertainment to high school graduations and area dance recitals.

A 2-story, $4.6 million, 27,600 square-foot expansion to the arts center was added in 2011.

The Convergent Media Center is Capital’s first new academic building in 50 years. It combines an array of studios, laboratories, classrooms, and offices over three floors and about 35,000 square feet. The facility houses six academic programs and is home to the student-run newspaper and the radio and television stations. The center is intended to promote experiential learning in a spirit of collaboration.

Bowling Green State University (BGSU) was established in 1910 and currently has an enrollment of more than 21,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Approximately 7,000 students reside on-campus in residence halls and university-owned houses. In order to keep up with demand for student housing, Capstone Development embarked on the process of constructing two privatized housing complexes on campus. The new community provides housing for 1,318 students in a mixture of private and shared bedrooms.

The development consists of two buildings, each with multiple wings of varying heights and orientation. Large community spaces are placed at the “hub” - providing larger lounges and study spaces, a game area, community kitchen, laundry, and multi-purpose rooms for group study. The structure is a combination of light gauge bearing walls, light gauge joists and structural steel.

Structural steel was included primarily to provide flexibility in the first floor layout. Large public spaces provided at the central first floor areas were located beneath light gauge bearing walls above and, to make this floor plan work, steel beams were needed to support the bearing walls above and transfer these loads to columns.

To meet the needs of BGSU, the entire project was designed and constructed in 20 months. The accelerated schedule required collaboration and communication among the entire design and construction team. It also required multiple, early bid packages. This new community – named Falcon Heights and Centennial Hall - opened in August 2011.

At Bowling Green State University (BGSU), the future of on campus dining is being realized now with the opening of the Carillon Place Dining Center. The 17,640-square-foot facility – located directly adjacent to the newly opened Centennial Residence Hall – was designed to achieve Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and set a standard for campus dining. BGSU’s desire to achieve this certification reflects the university’s commitment to the students, faculty, community and environment.

The design of Carillon Place includes a steel joist and wide flange framed roof, a steel framed second floor and reinforced masonry bearing walls. One unique feature of the dining center is an exterior second story seating area with an open, steel framed roof with an asymmetrically cantilevered structure. A series of long canopies and sweeping curves help integrate the two large cisterns located to the west of the structure. The cisterns are used to collect and store rainwater from the roof of the building. Recycled steel was used to contribute to the recycled material content in the building.

In order to provide stability, the high areas of steel over the exterior seating area required some very substantial lateral bracing. Providing a continuous load path for these lateral loads was a challenge due to the changing roof elevations that made the roof discontinuous. Masonry shear walls were also used to resist lateral loads.

The facility opened in time for the start of classes in the fall of 2011, on time.
