Hocking College - Residence Halls

The new Hocking College Residence Hall offers students the most modern college dormitory experience. The “lodge” style complex features two shared double-design buildings totaling 100,000 SF of development in Nelsonville, Ohio. The living quarters are more than just a place for students to eat and sleep; it includes study, recreation, meeting rooms, and laundry facilities. The college’s overall goal is to offer its students many opportunities for interaction and learning. With a beautiful view of the Hocking Valley, the structure also includes several green-built design techniques. The site’s location prompted challenges, as it is located on a hill-side a-top a former coal mine. The mines had to be grouted, and a deep foundation was established for the two structures. A cost-effective approach was implemented using a steel staggered truss system to frame the two seven-story buildings. This system was chosen since it complemented the use of the building and the site challenges. The system resulted in half the number of foundations required with more conventional framing systems. This resulted in significant savings in foundation costs.

Harrison Hall Marietta College Exterior Scope first light

This four-story, new residence hall (Harrison Hall) serves the growing resident population. The building structure uses masonry-bearing walls, precast concrete floors, and light-gage metal roof trusses. The soil conditions dictated a deep foundation system consisting of concrete-grade beams and auger-cast piles. The first floor is a structural two-way concrete slab. The brick veneer is supported at the upper levels using a proprietary system that allows the building insulation to extend almost continuously behind each relief angle. This helps to minimize thermal breaks in the exterior wall envelope. One challenging aspect of the project was the large chimneys that flank each wing. Anchorages were detailed to tie the chimneys to the roof at the top. Precast concrete plank sections were used to support the bases of the chimneys, as they started at the roof and did not continue down to the ground.

This new 100,000 SF, three-story building is home to the College of Education and Human Services at Cleveland State University. The facility occupies a highly visible site bringing together eight different departments on campus. Its three occupied floors respond to the unique site conditions by forming exterior gardens and plaza spaces accessible by both the campus and the city. On target for LEED Silver, the facility has multiple green roofs to diminish heat island effects and an innovative stormwater management system for rainwater run-off, two areas of concern in urban environments. A rain garden was created to educate the public about sustainability and its essential place in designing the built environment.

Structural Highlights: The slab extents vary by floor, resulting in numerous slab cantilevers and facade support conditions. The south elevation features tapered beams that extend out over the curtainwall below to create an overhang that diminishes in depth as it extends from the building. A three-story high open space through the center of the structure provides a circulation and gathering area on the first floor and allows natural light to reach many floors above. SMBH designed 15’ high screen walls on the roof to shield large mechanical units and cooling towers.

The Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center opened on November 6, 1993. The $15.2 million state-of-the-art performing arts complex serves as a performance home for Clark State’s season of events and six area resident art groups in Springfield and Wittenberg University. The award-winning, 86,000-square-foot Clark State Performing Arts Center is on 5.5 acres in downtown Springfield and houses rental space designed and equipped to accommodate musical performances, theater presentations, conferences, business meetings, and other activities.

With its 1,500-seat Kuss Auditorium, 200-seat Turner Studio Theatre, and the Salerno Educational Center, the Center can accommodate various events and educational activities.
