Hiring Senior Structural Engineer - 500px

The mission of the Senior Project Engineer is to deliver the documents that will allow our clients the insight to build safe, affordable structures and to offer creative solutions.  Provides quality control and technical support for other projects and engineers as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes and designs steel, concrete, masonry, wood, and cold-formed metal framing structures and components
  • Applies knowledge and expertise acquired through progressive experience to resolve crucial issues and/or unique conditions
  • Structural system selection
  • Builds relationships with external partners in the production of SMBH construction documents for complex and unique projects, responsible for the accuracy and completeness of documents
  • Determines code requirements
  • Supports SMBH QA/QC through independent drawing reviews and other methods as needed
  • Provides technical assistance, development, and leadership for other engineers where appropriate
  • Reports to Project Managers and keep them informed & updated regarding project developments, especially those affecting scope, project budget, and/or schedule
  • Understands SMBH contract and proposals as they relate to the scope
  • Independently performs site visits to evaluate existing conditions and provide construction observation. Can provide solutions to problems without assistance
  • May serve as Engineer of Record for managed projects
  • Responsive to the needs of clients and other SMBH team members via effective communications
  • Acts in alignment with the SMBH Core Values

Work Environment:

  • Office
  • Occasional presence on construction sites
  • Travel
  • This job can work in office, hybrid, or remotely in the USA

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering from an ABET accredited institution
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience creating structural designs, specifically buildings
  • Registered Professional Engineer “PE” recognized by a state licensing board
  • Two years of experience in a leadership role providing technical guidance, mentorship, and development to less experienced engineers
  • Mastery with the statics of structures
  • Mastery of SMBH contract and proposal scope
  • Member of a professional practice organization and attends local events
  • Advanced in design software: RAM Structural Systems, Revit, and AutoCAD
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Excellent communication both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a team environment; attention to detail; flexible and easily adapts to changing priorities

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work
  • Light to moderate lifting is required
  • Comfortable on a ladder or lift in a construction site environment
  • Construction site safety requirements must be followed as dictated by the site

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the scheduling and workload of engineering and BIM operations
  • Manages backlog workload and forecasting
  • Provides input on capacity
  • Assigns projects to project teams based on workload and experience level
  • Determines if staffing is in balance with the workload
  • Works with Business Development, Directors, and Finance to determine what projects we should accept based on profitability, company fit, and bandwidth
  • Administers projects to Vision from opportunity to completion
  • Helps ensure staff has appropriate exposure to a variety of projects to facilitate career development
  • Ensures developmental opportunities for engineering staff through work assignments
  • Works in collaboration with finance, marketing, and human resources
  • Assumes responsibility for administrative tasks that will free up engineers to focus on production and the managers to focus on their staff/project needs

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field
  • PMP or project planning certification preferred
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience managing projects
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience managing a team; able to lead and support multiple people on multiple projects
  • Familiarity with Deltek Vision software planning module or other project management software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a team environment; attention to detail; flexible and easily adapts to changing priorities

  • Work collaboratively with engineers and clients on the project team to deliver on time, on budget and per plan
  • Demonstrate a production mindset creating efficient and accurate production of construction documents and BIM models of building structures using Revit
  • Coordinate the SMBH Structural model with the various design team models to create an accurate 3D model of the building structure
  • Efficiently produce high quality construction documents of building structures that accurately integrate information from design team models, construction drawings, verbal instructions and redline mark-ups of building structures using Revit
  • Demonstrate understanding and command of building construction, and structural engineering terminology, through the accurate use in conversations and documentation

  • Analyzes and designs steel, concrete, masonry, wood and cold-formed metal framing structures and components on an introductory level
  • Applies standard techniques, procedures and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment
  • Works under the close direction of the Project Manager or experienced Project Engineer in preparing calculations and designs for specific elements or systems
  • Supervised contact with external partners in the production of SMBH construction documents for simple projects or limited portions of more complicated projects, responsible for the accuracy and completeness of documents
  • Provides design information to BIM Specialists, primarily in the form of architectural base drawings, clearly drawn hand sketches and mark-ups, written and verbal instructions
  • Performs BIM Specialist work as required for small and/or last-minute revisions to drawings to meet the deadline
  • Determines code requirements with support of PM
  • Keeps PM and Group informed and updated regarding project developments, especially those affecting scope and schedule
  • Takes direction on SMBH contract and proposals as they relate to scope
  • Manages workload with PM input
  • Responsive to the needs of clients and other SMBH team members via effective communications
  • Acts in alignment with the SMBH Core Values
